Dirk Campbell and Jan Hendrickse have spent many years studying the folk wind instrument traditions of Europe, the middle East, Asia and Africa. They first met in 1998 working for the Royal Shakespeare Company. In November 2003 Dirk received an invitation from the Greek artist Giorgos Kaltsidis to perform at an international festival in northern Greece in the spring of 2004. The World Wind Band was formed for this event, and the enthusiastic reception it received inspired Jan and Dirk to continue performing together.

The World Wind Band is partly a vehicle for the demonstration of traditional musical skills, partly a vehicle for new combinations. As a performing group it presents arrangements of ethnic wind traditions from various parts of the world. As a facilitative group it is also a medium for broader collaborative and educational projects.

The World Wind Band’s repertoire includes the following wind instrument traditions:

Armenia: duduk (reedpipe)

Balkans: kaval (flute), gajda (bagpipe)

Britain: English pipe and tabor, Scottish Highland pipes

China: dizi (flute)

Czech Republic: dudy (bagpipe)

Egypt: Egyptian ney (flute), zummara and arghoul (reeded double-pipes)

Ghana: sarewa (flute)

Greece: gaida (bagpipe), floyera (flute)

India: bansuri (flute)

Indonesia: suling (flute)

Iran: Iranian ney (flute), sorna (shawm)

Ireland: uilleann pipes, Irish flute

Italy: zampogna (double-chanter bagpipe)

Korea: tegum (flute)

Sardinia: launeddas (reeded triple-pipe)

Slovakia: fujara (overtone flute)

Tanzania: filimbi (overtone flute)

Turkey: kaval (flute), tulum
