Appendix 1: comparison of different performances
Two versions of My Love is in America (example 15). The first, a transcription from a performance by Willie Clancy who, by his placing of notes and movement of line, demonstrates an instinctive feeling for the tension and vitality of Gaelic art forms. The second, from the Roche collection of Irish tunes, is a transcription of a competent but comparatively dull performance (player unknown).
Two versions of The Morning Star (example 16). The first is a transcription of part of Paddy Keenan's performance of the tune on the Bothy Band album Out of the Wind Into the Sun, circa 1978 (in order to avoid visual confusion, only rolls are indicated). The second (player unknown) is from O'Neill's 1001 Irish tunes, first published in New York at the beginning of the 20th century. O'Neill's is the largest single collection of Irish dance music and is for that reason sometimes thought of as definitive. Many of the tunes collected by O'Neill are of indifferent quality, however.
